and harvest field trip - Presented by Mac SmithThe Pacific Coast and inland waters of Washington State abound with marine algae. There are hundreds of these seaweeds or "sea vegetables" found throughout the tidal zones of the numerous seashore habitats of this area. Learn the natural history of many of these seaweeds as well as historical, aboriginal and current uses for food, technology and medicine. The slide show lecture and talk will cover basic seaweed biology, and how to find, collect, preserve and cook with seaweeds. You will also learn how to prepare special sea vegetable dishes to enjoy as snacks, soups, salads, stir-fries, and dessert.

Ongoing: PT Marine Science Center - Learning from Orcas - The Story of Hope"The Port Townsend Marine Science Center (PTMSC) is thrilled to announce the opening of a new exhibit, "Learning from Orcas—The Story of Hope," which will be the centerpiece in the Natural History Exhibit in Fort Worden State Park.
The exhibit opens Saturday, September 29th at noon. Admission is free to the public on Saturday and Sunday of that weekend, and open from noon to 4 p.m
The new exhibit tells a story that started in 2002 when a transient orca called CA 189—later named Hope by PTMSC students—beached herself and died in the Dungeness Spit area. Her story continues to the present day through the work of scientists, community members and PTMSC staff and volunteers. Hope’s skeleton has been articulated and will be hanging in the Natural History Exhibit.

Hatcheries do not revive wild fish runs. Hatcheries harm wild salmon. We now have a large body of science that shows hatcheries are yet one more problem we inflict on salmon. But, yes, there are many organizations, such as WDFW and various tribes, that derive a lot of taxpayer revenue from hatchery operations, and these organizations dominate the flow of misinformation.
You might want to make arrangements with “The Osprey” to publish Bill McMillan’s story in the current issue. Bill documents how eliminating hatchery fish increased the total population of salmon in the Wind River, which had previously suffered hatchery plants for many years.
