Pit To Pier Rises Again.

In a Feb. 13 print edition article by Allison Arthur of the Port Townsend Leader, John Fabian of the Hood Canal Coalition describes several new permits submitted to Jefferson County by proponents of a project to barge gravel from Shine through the Hood Canal Bridge. In December proponents submitted a new noise study and a new traffic impact analysis. The project was originally proposed by Fred Hill Materials in 2002 and is now called T-ROC, an acronym for Thorndyke Resources Operation Complex, an offspring of Fred Hill Materials which is going through Chapter 7 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

it would be helpful if references to original articles included a URL link in your postings..in this case, the article you reference is NOT in the online versions of the Leader…sorry..

Vegetables from the Sea; An “Edible Seaweed” evening lecture
and harvest field trip - Presented by Mac Smith

The Pacific Coast and inland waters of Washington State abound with marine algae. There are hundreds of these seaweeds or "sea vegetables" found throughout the tidal zones of the numerous seashore habitats of this area. Learn the natural history of many of these seaweeds as well as historical, aboriginal and current uses for food, technology and medicine. The slide show lecture and talk will cover basic seaweed biology, and how to find, collect, preserve and cook with seaweeds. You will also learn how to prepare special sea vegetable dishes to enjoy as snacks, soups, salads, stir-fries, and dessert.

Field Trip: May 25, Saturday, meet at 8:00 am at Freshwater Bay for low tide exploration and gathering (about 40 minute drive from Sequim, about 15 miles west of Port Angeles on HWY 112). Carpooling will be arranged at lecture or by contacting instructor.

Cost: $40.00/lecture and field trip; OR $20.oo/each event (indicate choices below)

Ongoing: PT Marine Science Center - Learning from Orcas - The Story of Hope"

The Port Townsend Marine Science Center (PTMSC) is thrilled to announce the opening of a new exhibit, "Learning from Orcas—The Story of Hope," which will be the centerpiece in the Natural History Exhibit in Fort Worden State Park.

The exhibit opens Saturday, September 29th at noon. Admission is free to the public on Saturday and Sunday of that weekend, and open from noon to 4 p.m

The new exhibit tells a story that started in 2002 when a transient orca called CA 189—later named Hope by PTMSC students—beached herself and died in the Dungeness Spit area. Her story continues to the present day through the work of scientists, community members and PTMSC staff and volunteers. Hope’s skeleton has been articulated and will be hanging in the Natural History Exhibit.
